Monday Moment: Pins and Needles
written by Chris Baker
I will never forget the sensation of pins and needles stabbing my skin! My wife and I went kayaking on the Colorado river back in 2012. Our tour guide stopped us as we approached a cliff. She asked if any of us wanted to climb the cliff and jump into the crystal-clear water below. I am not one to shy away from a challenge, so I started my assent. When it was my turn to jump, I ran and leaped off the tip of the rock. I instantly had that sinking feeling in my stomach as I was falling with rapid speed and then IMPACT. My skin felt like it was being stabbed by a million knives all at once. I was so gung-ho to cliff jump that I failed to ask what the water temperature was. You may have guessed it…50 degrees!
I have been reading “Fearfully and Wonderfully Made” by Dr. Paul Brand. Brand relates the physical body to the Body of Christ. Currently, I am reading about the skin. When was the last time you stopped and thanked the Lord for the ability to feel? Brand writes, “One tap of a fingernail can tell me if I am touching paper, fabric, wood, plastic, or steel…[the human body] can discern a thousandth of an ounce of pressure on the tip of a half-inch hair” (pg. 125).
When was the last time you stopped and thanked the Lord for the ability to feel? Stop and think about the sensation of touching a cat’s silky soft fur, the prick of a pine needle, the warm and soft touch of a human hand, the grainy feel of sand, etc.? How often do we take these wonderful abilities for granted?
Take a moment this Monday and thank the Lord for the ability to feel.
No better model of tactile love exists than His Son [Jesus]. And now we are called to be His sensitive “skin” in the world.
Dr. Paul Brand
A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.
