Why Worry?

Why Worry?
written by Chris Baker

Why do we worry? Did you know the average person, excluding the United States, makes under two dollars a day? Many around the world live day to day and literally do not know if they will have enough food to feed their family tomorrow. Would you find it hard not to worry about tomorrow if you only had enough food for today? How about something a little closer to home? Do you worry about the effects of COVID-19? How will it affect my business, livelihood, finances, retirement, mortgage, income and so forth? Do you find it difficult not to worry about the world of tomorrow? Jesus spoke into this very subject in Matthew 6:25-34. Take a moment and read this section by clicking here.

Have you ever observed birds in nature? They are very opportunistic creatures. Just the other day I observed a goose drinking rainwater that was flowing over the curb. The goose didn’t question where the water came from, he simply stole a drink while he had the opportunity. I also like to watch the robins in the morning. They hop around the ground searching for worms or whatever else they can eat. Every morning they search and every morning they are reworded with food. While parking my car in the car port one day I happened to look up and spot a nest. The sparrow saw a nice place for a home and claimed it. It was not worried about who owned the car port or how long it would be able to dwell there; rather, the sparrow saw a dry safe spot to build a home. None of the birds in these examples worried. They did not worry about finding water, food or shelter, and yet God provided for them. Jesus said in verse 26, “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they” (NIV)?

One of my neighbors, Ralph, has a beautiful tulip garden! He has a variety of colors that brighten up his front yard, even from hundreds of yards away. Jesus marveled at the flowers of the field. Verse 29 says, “I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these” (NIV). Jesus goes on to describe how God clothes the fields with such beauty, only for it to be burned up the next day. If God spends that much detail and attention clothing the flowers and grass, then how much more will He clothe us?

If God takes this much concern for nature, then how much more will He care for us? Scripture says that we should not worry about our needs because the Lord knows what they are. Allow me to highlight the word needs! Jesus did not say wants, He said needs. The Lord is fully aware of your daily needs! He goes on to say in verse 33, “seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (NIV). Notice the Lord says to first seek the Kingdom and then our needs will be provided. All too often, we want the Lord to provide for us without first seeking His Kingdom. Jesus said the greatest commandment is, “[to] love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” (Matt. 22:36).

We are to love God with all that we are. Make the Lord your first priority today and all your needs will be provided for. If He provides for the birds of the air and clothes the fields of the earth, then why wouldn’t He care for your needs as well? “Are you not much more valuable than they” (Matt. 6:26)? Instead of worrying about tomorrow, place your faith in Jesus today!
