Taste and See

Taste & See
written by Chris Baker

What causes a craving? Do you crave what you’ve never tasted? What sorts of things do you crave? Do you crave things that are beneficial to you? We all know, and probably have experienced, how easy it is to crave unhealthy things. Have you ever tasted a small piece of cake and then went back for a larger piece? Why did that happen? Could it be that you got a taste for it and now that taste turned into a craving? That craving may now consume your thinking! That being said, can we crave good things? Can good cravings have the same affect? Let’s turn to Scripture and see what the Apostle Peter has to say about cravings.

1 Peter 2:2-3 says, “like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good” (NIV). Look at the imagery Peter uses. Think about how important a mother’s milk, or formula, is to a newborn! That child could not grow, or even survive, without the nutrients it provides. The newborn desires more milk after experiencing the initial taste. Peter is comparing this analogy to our spiritual lives!

Christians cannot survive without the spiritual nutrients found in the Word of God. You will not, and cannot, continue to grow without those nutrients. Babies cannot be force fed. I have often seen a mother put a bottle to their child’s lips, only to find the child turning their face from the bottle. Unless that child desires to drink, the mother’s effort will be in vein. Christian, you must be the one to drink of this spiritual milk. The Lord will not force Himself upon you. He will gently continue to prompt you, as a mother would her child, but the decision to drink is solely yours.

Have you ever experienced the Word of God before? You have to taste the milk in order to crave it. Unless you experience the written Word, you will never crave it! I challenge you to experience the Risen Christ! I implore you to spend time in His Word. Could that small taste turn into a craving? I pray that it will!

The previous three days focused on prayer; therefore, I encourage you to spend time praying about this passage of Scripture. Begin by telling the Lord how much you want to experience His Word and pray for a small taste of it. I pray that you will begin to be transformed through the pages of the Bible. I pray that spending time with God, through prayer and Scripture reading, would develop into a true craving for you. I am encouraged to see how the nutrients of the Word will begin to shape and transform your personal walk with Jesus Christ!!! Go now, “taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalm 38:8).

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

John 1:1-3

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1:14
