Can the Weight Be Lifted?
written by Chris Baker
Have you have ever carried a burden? Sometimes, burdens can seem like a sack of dumbbells on your chest! You cannot move or go anywhere without the weight. Many times, our sin feels this way. The burden feels too great to bear! What are we to do? What can possibly remove this weight?
Take a moment and read Psalm 38 by clicking here. Look at the way David describes his sin. He says it’s like piercing arrows, festering wounds, searing pain, he even feels feeble and crushed! The very heart within him groans! Have you ever felt this way? Do you feel this way now? Take heart, there is hope!
There is no reason for you to carry this weight of sin for one more second! Jesus already carried that weight for you on the cross. We thank God for the weight of sin because it makes us aware of when we have grieved the Spirit of God. However, we are not expected to carry the weight of sin. Acknowledge the sin, confess the sin to God, repent of the sin and allow the blood of Jesus to cover your sin (1 John 2:2)!
Christians speak of the blood of Christ for a reason. It is not to be disgusting or savage. Blood is required for sin. In the Old Testament, the priests had to sacrifice animals to cover the sin of a person. However, that animal was not sufficient. It only provided a temporary covering. The sacrifice of Jesus was powerful enough to cover sin for all time! This is why Hebrews 7:26-28 says that Jesus does not have to offer sacrifices day and night. His sacrifice was enough to cover sin forever! Therefore, we need to confess that sin so that it can be atoned for. Do not carry it, rather, confess it!
The Lord never intended for you to live in bondage. He gave His Son for you so that you could experience freedom! Our sin often feels like David’s description; weighty, cumbersome, oppressing and intoxicating. Thanks be to God that Jesus can remove that sin! Simply offer it to Him today, right now even! Confess it, repent of it (by turning away from it), and accept the free gift of grace.
Jesus already bore the weight of your sin, therefore, there is no reason for you to bear it any longer. Hear me! It does not matter what you have done, how grievous or how overbearing. His blood, which was shed on the cross for you, can cover it! The ball is in your court. Do not choose the weight of sin, rather, choose freedom which is only found in Christ Jesus the Lord! Which will you choose? Will you carry it or confess it?

Jesus, we confess our sin to you today. We acknowledge that we have sinned against you and we repent of it. We no longer wish to carry this weight! Forgive us of our sin and cleanse us from all iniquity. Make us holy and blameless in your sight through your Son. Thank you for the gift of grace. I do not deserve it. The sin which Christ carried for me on that cross was intended for me. The punishment He bore was intended for me. Thank you for taking the punishment for me. Thank you for your grace! In Jesus name. Amen.
