Just Like Cherry Pie!
written by Chris Baker
There are things in life that you instantly love, while others take more of a conscience effort. I’ll never forget the first time I had my mother in-law’s cherry pie; it was out of this world! After that initial experience, I was always excited to eat her cherry pie. In fact, all you had to do was mention it and I began to think about, dwell on and look forward to the next time I could eat it. I am sure we all have favorite desserts, foods, activities, etc. that we enjoy. On the contrary, what motivates us to engage in the less enjoyable things? Is there a way to increase that motivation? Let’s look to the Psalms for the answer.
Psalm 119 happens to be one of my favorite Psalms. David talks a lot about Gods Word in this Psalm, especially in the beginning. He has such a love and desire for God’s Word. Where does that passion come from? Psalm 119:18 says, “open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law” (NIV). David is asking the Lord to reveal the hidden truths of, and increase his love for, the Scriptures. We can model David in this discipline.
Verses 33-40 say things like teach me, give me understanding, direct my path, turn my heart, turn my eyes and so forth. David is asking God for His help in drawing close to Him. This is fantastic news! We can begin to look at Scripture as we do cherry pie. We can grow to love it, desire it and get excited just at the mention of it.
David navigates the way for us to fall in love with Gods Word. We partner with God by being available, thus providing the opportunity for Him to speak to us through His Word. If we ask, He will unlock the hidden truths of Scripture. He will open our eyes, direct our path, give us understanding, and turn our eyes and hearts toward Him. This is how He continues to transform the life of the Believer.
Lord, I thank you for Jesus! He showed us the importance of your Word when He said, “man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God” (NIV). Lord it’s so important that we know your Word and learn to depend on it! I pray that you will increase our desire for your Word. Please, reveal your hidden truths to us. Give us a fresh outpouring of your Spirit. Help us as we seek to draw nearer to you. Your Word promises in James 4:8, “come near to God and he will come near to you.” Draw close O Lord, draw close! Amen!
