Lead Me to the Rock

Lead Me to the Rock
written by Chris Baker

Have you ever seen, or read, “Lord of the Rings?” If not, you will still get the analogy. There are some fantastic battle scenes in the movie. Each movie builds up to an impossible situation. The forces of the enemy appear to be overwhelmingly powerful, large, mighty and simply undefeatable. Throughout the movie, or book, you do not see a way around the darkness. How can good prevail? How can they possibly overcome this vast army? Life can seem this way at times. Sometimes we face situations that seem too big, powerful, mighty, or simply overwhelming. How are we supposed to respond in times like this? Let’s take a look at Scripture to find the answers.

Take a moment and read Psalm 11 by clicking here. David appears to be facing some oppressive times. David almost seems trapped. Look at his response, he cries out to the Lord. David points out that God sees everything. He examines the righteous and sees the deeds of the ungodly. Nothing goes unnoticed or out of His watchful care. He sees all, knows all and nothing comes as a surprise to Him. Does this bring you hope today?

Being a pastor, I am privy to the intimate details of people’s lives. They share situations and circumstances that are not always common knowledge with their pastor. I have heard countless stories of impossible and overwhelming situations. In response I will often say, “that does seem impossible and I have no idea how God will work this out, but I have confidence that He will.” Then we go to prayer! In prayer, we ask God to do the unimaginable. We ask Him to make a way where there seems to be no way. I have seen God’s faithfulness prevail, more times than I can count! He has come through and worked out some profound and incomprehensible situations.

Evil always appears to have the upper hand. It wants to leave you feeling helpless and afraid. Evil seeks to destroy your very soul. BUT our God is greater! Evil seemed overpowering on Good Friday. Evil seemed to have the upper hand when Jesus died on the cross and was laid in the tomb. The disciples were devastated and the thought of Jesus coming back to life seemed unfeasible. However, God had the upper hand. Evil appeared to win, but in reality, it was defeated! Jesus defeated the forces of evil through His death and resurrection.

David mentions the future of the wicked in verse 6. Scripture reminds us that Satan will eventually be cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:10), where he will be tormented forever. Although, for now it may still appear that evil has the upper hand. I assure you it does not (1 Corinthians 15:54-57)! Do not be discouraged, rather take refuge in the Lord.

The Lord hears your cries, examines and knows all things, has already defeated the enemy, so trust in Him today! You can take refuge in Him because He cares for you. Cry to Him because He hears you. Place your trust in Him because He holds your future. Scripture says, “no weapon that is forged against you will prosper” (Isaiah 54:17). No matter how oppressive life may seem, take refuge in the Lord!

“He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

1 Corinthians 15:57b

“When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the Rock that is higher than I.”

Psalm 61: 2

“For with God NOTHING shall be impossible.”

Luke 1:37

“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”

Psalm 91:1
