Jesus Is Calling
Written by Chris Baker
Has the Lord ever given you a vision? The Bible tells us of many different people who have experienced different kinds of visions. Sometimes a person will have a significant dream or experience something like a daydream. I had the privilege of experiencing a vision in 2007, while attending “Youth With A Mission” (YWAM), in Kona Hawaii. Click here for information on YWAM, Kona Hawaii.
It was a typical Wednesday morning at YWAM. The whole base gathered around 10am for corporate worship. Little did I know, this would soon be a worship experience that I would never forget. I had been learning to hear and identify the voice of God, however, I had never experienced a vision before. I began to pray, during the middle of worship, and that is when God spoke. This vision played like a movie in my mind. I can remember it as vividly as I saw it 13 years ago.
The vision began with me walking along a dirt path during the early hours of the morning. There was beautiful tall green grass, to my right, that gently swayed with the breeze. During my walk, I happened to see something behind the grass. I began to look closer when I realized it was Jesus. “What are you doing back there Lord,” I said. “Why are you hiding behind the grass?” Then all of a sudden, we changed places and I was behind the grass. When I asked the Lord why I was behind the grass, He said, “you are hiding.” “Why am I hiding,” I responded. “You are afraid of failing,” He said. Then off in the distance was a gorgeous cliff. The view was as far as the eye could see; it was absolutely breathtaking! The Lord placed His hand out, while standing in front of the cliff, and motioned for me to join Him. The only way out of the grass was through a very narrow dirt path. Finally, I decided to join the Lord, which required me to walk through the narrow path. Then, just as I started to walk, I began to fall! Right as I was about to slam into the ground, He caught me. The Lord had extended His hand and began to raise me up. Then He spoke these words, “you are afraid of falling, but do not worry! Whenever you step out in faith, and begin to fall, I will be right there to pick you up. Do not live in fear of failure, rather, continue to trust Me.”
The devotion today is based on Psalm 145. There is a lot I could say about this Psalm, however, I will only focus on one verse. Verse 14 says, “The Lord upholds all those who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down” (NIV). The vision mentioned above came to mind as I was meditating upon this Psalm. May this vision be a reminder for you to keep your eyes on Jesus. Sometimes the things that He calls us to are intimidating. Often times, we do not feel qualified for the task and feel there are others who are more capable than we are.
Jesus is calling us out of the familiar. How can you experience faith if you never step out in it? Maybe it is more about what God is wanting to do in you, then it is about the task or ministry He is calling you to do. Could He be developing within you a deeper dependency on Him? Why not ask Him? The Lord has asked you to do it, not someone else. Obviously, He believes you can do it, or He would not ask you. I am being vague on purpose. I do not know what the Lord is asking of you, or where He is calling you, or where He wants you to go or who He wants you to speak to. You are the only person that knows the answer to that question!
I pray that you will step out in faith today. I pray your faith in Jesus will overcome the fear of failure. Who cares if you fall! I would rather fail at something than not attempt at all. If you step out in faith, no matter the outcome, you cannot fail.
“The Lord is righteous in all his ways and faithful in all he does” (Psalm 145:17).
